Work in Canada

In a Nutshell..

Your first step to obtaining a Canadian work permit is to get a job offer from a Canadian employer.

Once you have a qualifying job offer, the process of applying for your Canadian work permit may begin.

If your Country has an agreement in place with Canada and you fall in a certain Age range, you may apply for work without having a current job.

How do I Apply for a Work Permit?

  • Pre Step

    Decide your Category

Before we begin, it should be noted that depending on what category / program you wish to enter, there will be different procedures to follow.

    There are 3 main Categories

    1. Working Holiday
    2. Young Professionals
    3. Internships / Co op programs

For Working Holiday, you’ll be able to work ANYWHERE and for ANY employer in Canada and its an Open Work permit.

A lot depends on your Country and Age if you qualify for this.

For the second category (Young Professionals), you will be tied to ONE employer in ONE location and its for a Skilled Position (A,O or B).

The third and final category is the Internships program and is for those looking to complete their qualification and need to enter an internship. Also for skilled positions.

  • Step 1

Get a job offer from a Canadian employer.

This is your first step in most cases.

If you are within a certain age, and your country has an agreement in place with Canada, you can apply for an open work permit for up to two years without a job offer through the International Experience Canada (IEC) program and this includes working holidays.

  • Step 2

    Agreements and Age

Find out if your Country has an agreement in place and if you in a particular age to qualify for Open work permit?

  • Step 3

Your Employer needs to obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment

Your employer needs to submit this to the Canadian Government stating that they are hiring a foreign national.

  • Step 4

    Submit Application

You can submit your application via the Canada Government Website.

  • Step 5

    Spouse and Children

Its also possible to aquire permits for your spouse and children to stay with you in Canada.

Depending on the level of the position in work being offered to you, your spouse may be eligible for an Open Work Permit as discussed earlier.

For any children who wish to stay with you in Canada, they have to be under 22 years of age.
